The kafala system, also known as the sponsorship system, regulates the 200,000-plus migrant domestic workers in Lebanon. The event began with Elizabeth Frantz providing a brief introduction to the situation of migrant domestic workers in the Middle East, with a focus on some of the particular challenges Nepali women face. Dr Frantz's gave introduction followed by Swedish photographer Lucas Pernin's presentation on the situation of migrant domestic workers in Lebanon. The visual investigation was built upon the testimonies given by women in the secret shelters in Beirut and provides a visualization of a highly discriminatory labour system prevalent throughout West Asia.

Lucas is currently in Nepal to present his Lebanon project and continues to investigate the consequences of the kafala system in sending countries.
