The exploitation of Nepali migrants in Qatar has recently received global media attention. With preparations for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar now well underway, the media is likely to continue to shine a harsh light on the worst excesses of Qatar’s treatment of its vast migrant workforce – low pay, squalid accommodation, the kafala system, injuries and deaths. However, some of the coverage of the issues has been simplistic and sensationalist. This talk, illustrated with photos and video, will give an overview of the problems faced by Nepali migrants in Qatar, but it will also seek to present a more nuanced analysis of the problems and suggest some solutions.

Pete Pattisson is an award-winning British journalist who contributes to The Guardian newspaper. His special interests are in human rights, labour rights and modern forms of slavery. His articles and film exposing the treatment of Nepali migrant workers in Qatar in September 2013 provoked an international debate about whether Qatar should retain the right to host the 2022 World Cup.
