Summary:

A presentation on the report of the research Situation of Migrant Workers Families was presented in the first session of the Programme, and the floor was later opened for interaction and discussion. The focus of the programme was on the wives of migrant workers only.

  • The research was conducted in seven districts, from February 2011, and has incorporated stories/incidents of 263 women whose husbands have/had migrated for foreign employment.
  • The objective of the research was to find out the financial, social and familial situation of the wives of migrant workers, to find out the problems faced by them along with ways to solve them.
  • Data on the following were presented
  • Characteristic of the respondents by age, caste, family type, destination of husbands
  • Reason for taking up foreign employment
  • Medium used for migration
  • Remittance sent/(not), recipient of remittance
  • Skill of husbands
  • Economic situation before and after migration
  • Migrants relation to family before and after migration
  • Violence faced by wives of migrant workers
  • Types of violence (social, domestic)
  • Relation with husband before and after migration
  • The findings also include
  • Increased work load on the wives of the migrant workers’
  • Insecurity and mental pressure of the wives due to suspicion, hatred, verbal and physical abuse by family and society
  • Break-up of relations and divorce due to false news of suspicion (of wives affairs) by family and society, to the husbands

Five women (wives of migrant workers’) from Khotang, Dhanusha, Udaypur, Dang and Bajura also shared their stories/incidents in the programme. The interaction focused on the need for local level awareness, literacy, mental readiness and discussion among migrant workers’ family prior to leaving for foreign employment, etc., as ways to address the problems faced by the wives of migrant workers.
