Allure Of Study Abroad

Dixya Poudel

Studying abroad has become a trend in Nepal. Most students apply for undergraduate studies abroad after finishing their higher secondary level education. Others apply for graduate level studies after completion of their Bachelor's degree from Nepal. There are many advantages of studying in foreign nations. Not only do students get a higher quality education, they also get to experience new culture in foreign lands.

Most Nepali students seek higher education in foreign nations such as Australia, the United States, Canada, India, Japan, Korea, China and most European nations. Once enrolled, they get to experience new learning methods and choose their fields of study from a wide range of subjects. Most of such subjects aren't taught in Nepal at all. Thus students abroad can learn more about themselves, their interests and passions as they get to engage their minds in new fields of studies.

Abroad education expands our horizon as we get to see the world. And how different is the world once we get out of our comfort zones and step foot in foreign lands. Then, students get to meet fellow students, form friendships and learn to adjust in the new culture. Each country has its own history that comes with different traditions and norms. Studying in foreign nations really puts the students in new perspectives.

The language, food and social atmosphere vary according to the countries from which the international students benefit greatly. In a way, this encourages personal and interpersonal growth in the students. Another benefit of studying abroad is that students can work and learn as they pursue their passions. Since studying in foreign nation is quite expensive, students can work certain hours and make their way through college.

Although we should support students as they apply for education abroad, we must also encourage them to invest their knowledge and skill in Nepal. Brain drain has created a shortage of skilled manpower in Nepal. Those who choose to stay and study in Nepal have to make do with subpar education and minimal employment opportunities. In Nepal, there are limited fields of education to pursue. The situation is different to those who get admitted to well-known colleges abroad. There are many prestigious colleges abroad which provide students with challenging and rigorous education, enabling them to compete in the global job market after graduation.

There is no doubt that education is important. All nations need more and more students in new fields of studies. The main apprehension is that once Nepali students graduate from colleges abroad, they are lured by economic prospects in foreign nations. Overall, Nepali students are known to study in more than sixty different nations worldwide.

According to Foreign Education department, in 2019, the number of Nepali students applying to go abroad was as high as 323,972. Till date, the primary choices for higher education are Australia and USA which offer admissions to Nepali students in quite a high number. Skilled manpower is the foundation of a nation's growth. Nepal should focus on supporting the youth to build a career within the country. With most qualified and skilled minds working in foreign nations, there will be a dearth in the nation's manpower in the long run. While education is a priority, the responsibility for Nepal's development should be its youth's utmost concern.
