COVID-19 cases surge at Nepal border points as Nepali migrant workers flee home after second wave hits India

KANCHANPUR, April 3: Twenty-four people, who had recently returned home from India, have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

This was revealed after the COVID-19 tests were carried out at the Gadda Chauki and Trinagar check posts on Friday.

Among the 623 people who underwent an antigen test at the Trinagar checkpoint, 22 were tested positive for the COVID-19, according to Superintendent of Police of the Armed Police Force Nepal in Saileswari, Birendra Bahadur Aiyer.

Two people were tested positive for the virus when COVID-19 tests were conducted among 823 people who came into Nepal through the Gadda Chauki check post.

Nepal has been conducting COVID-19 tests to only those people experiencing the symptoms of COVID-19 in the health desk set up at the border points.

On an average, 700 to 1,000 people are entering Nepal via the southern border daily. Many Nepali nationals working in India are returning home after a second wave of COVID-19 hit various parts of India.

However, 305 Nepalis left for India through the Trinagar checkpoint and 150 from the Gaddachauki check post on Friday itself.
