May Day Observed

The 122nd International Worker’s day, also known as May Day, was observed throughout the country today with the slogan ‘Social Security for Workers.

In his May Day message, Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal said Nepali workers were yet to experience a qualitative change in their livelihood because of political instability prevailing in the country. The prime minister further said the political scenario was hindering workers from enjoying their rights.

Unified CPN-M Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said the country was at a crossroads from where it could either move towards regression and counter-revolution or strengthened independence and successful completion of the revolution. “It is high time progressive forces safeguard the achievements of the decade-long people’s war and Janaandolan II,” Dahal further said.

Trade unions such as All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF), Nepal Trade Union Congress-Independent (NTUC-I) and General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT), organised separate rallies in the Capital and other parts of the country. Labour unions, affiliated to various political parties, urged the government to provide social security and other benefits to workers.
