The fifth General Convention of the Trade Union Congress held here has elected Khilanath Dahal as its chairman. Dahal defeated his rival Pushkar Acharya by 62 votes.

This is the first time in 23 years that the Nepali Congress-aligned trade union held the election for the top posts after its erstwhile chairman Laxman Basnet decided to hand over the responsibility to others.

Declaring the poll results, election committee coordinator Yogendra Bahadur Adhikari said 1,569 votes were counted of the total 1,611, while 54 votes were declared invalid.

Ramji Kunwar from the Koirala faction was elected the senior vice-chairman, while Mahendra Prasad Yadav, also from the Koirala camp, emerged victorious as the general secretary.

Kunwar garnered 752 votes, while his rival Krishna Prasad Poudel got 618 votes. Likewise, Yadav bagged 664 votes, which was six more than his rival Dhrubachandra Gautam bagged.
