Earthquake-hit families still await relocation

Quake-displaced Dudhamaya Sunuwar of Harkapur-9 in the district has been living in a temporary structure built in another ward for past four months.
“We moved here after the April 25 quake damaged my house,” she said, adding that the displaced people are facing many difficulties in the temporary settlement and still unable to return to their houses.
Another displaced Dhansara Sunuwar also shared the same problem.
“Life in the shelter is too hard due to scorching sun and cold,” Dhansara said, stating that they are not sure about how long they will have to stay there.
VDC officials had relocated the 167 quake-displaced families to the temporary settlement built on a rented land.
The District Disaster Management Committee had identified 29 landslide-prone areas after the devastating quake and relocated people from Bilandu, Harkapur, Prapcha, Gamnangtar, Mulkharka and Tarkerabari.
Chief District Officer Yadav Subedi said they are yet to plan for the permanent settlement of the displaced families.
He said they have also informed Ministry of Home Affairs of the matter. The quake-hit families are ready to move from the camps if government provides them land to build houses. “We own land but we are living like squatters due to risks,” Dudhamaya said.
