Maya´s (name changed) dry lips betrayed the difficulty she was going through narrating the betrayal and hardship in her life. She had been taken to Bangkok, thailand via Calcutta with the promise of a job as an office assistant, but she never got any job. Earning Thai bhat and caring for her family back home became a distant dream for her after her boyfriend-turned agent tried to take advantage of her sexually. 

Maya, 26, was too naïve to realise the perils of trusting people who got her free air tickets and a free visa for leaving the country in search of foreign employment. “I was promised a job as an office assistant in Bangkok, but I never got any job there,” she said, adding, “I left my studies in Nepal and went overseas because I wanted to earn some money and look after my family.” Instead, she was taken straight to her boyfriend´s home from the airport and asked to rest for a few weeks. 

Some days after her arrival in Bangkok, Dipu Jung Subba, a Nepali national, tried to abuse her sexually. “I was asked to come to his room to give him some medicine but he tried to abuse me sexually,” she said. She added that it was the darkest day of her life. 

She wanted to come back to Nepal that very night but she feared social disgrace and ostricism. She even attempted suicide several times out of sheer desparation. 

Losing all hope, she ran out of the house but Dipu was able to track her and he took possession of her again. Later, he gave her fake promises, vowing to hold her hand forever and take care of her family in Nepal. “I was lured by his sweet promises and fell in love with him. I thought I would get his support for making my mother happy,” she said.

After being in a relationship with Dipu for almost two years, she came to Nepal to renew her visa. But she later found out that he had multiple relations with other women. It was a very difficult moment learning that Dipu had betrayed and cheated her. “First, he cheated me with a fake job and later played with my feelings,” she narrated with a heavy heart. 

However, her bold and outspoken personality suggests that she would keep fighting for justice till the end. She wants to see Dipu behind bars and justice for herself. Dipu had been in Nepal in 2011 and had taken Maya with him to Bangkok from Morang district.
