Rescue workers languishing in Malaysian jails: CIAA

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority today recommended to the government to facilitate the release and rescue of Nepali citizens languishing in Malaysian jails and detention centres.

The constitutional anti-corruption agency asked government authorities, including the Foreign Employment Promotion Board, to provide two million rupees to the Nepali Embassy in Malaysia to facilitate the release and rescue process.

The CIAA made this recommendation following a discussion with officials at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, and FEPB.

It told the authorities to allocate budget and bring home the bodies of Nepali migrant workers, who have died in Malaysia and other countries. The fiat comes weeks after CIAA Chief Lokman Singh Karki visited Malasiya and Thailand. Karki had held discussions with Nepali migrant workers and representatives of Non-Resident Nepalis’ Association, Malaysia.

The anti-corruption watchdog also directed the authorities to request the Ministry of Labour and Employment to provide training to those citizens, who want to go abroad for jobs, and to support them by mobilising government’s fund. It also told the authorities to arrange medical tests for foreign job aspirants at government hospitals.

Further, the CIAA appealed the  authorities to address the shortage of human resources in Nepali embassies without delay. It also called the government to ensure social security of Nepali migrant workers. In a press release issued on behalf of the CIAA, its Spokesperson Shreedhar Sapkota asked the government to make the immigration process easier for Nepali migrant workers.
