Returnee illegal workers to be fined

Nepali migrants working in Malaysia illegally willing to return home are required to pay fines upon their return, the Nepali Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said. 

The embassy made public a notice on the matter on Tuesday, in response to news reports that it delayed delivering information on the required process for illegal Nepali workers to return home. Officials of the embassy said, that according to the Department of Immigration in Malaysia, a Nepali migrant working illegally for up to 30 days is fined 900 Malaysian ringgit, 1,000 ringgit from 30 days to six months, 2,000 ringgit from six months to 3 years and 3,000 ringgit for more than 3 years.

It is said that illegal Nepali migrants willing to return home are required to acquire a ‘travel permit’ from the Nepali embassy, and have to pay 100 ringgit at the Department of Immigration in Malaysia, each along with the set fines to get a ‘special pass’.
