Temp teachers shut schools

KATHMANDU, AUG 30 -

Openly flouting the government’s decision to establish schools as a peace zone, the Temporary Teachers’ Struggle Committee (TTSC), an umbrella organisation of temporary teachers appointed after April 2006, on Friday announced a shutdown call targeting public schools across the country. However, it had a feeble impact mainly in the western part of the country.

Claiming that the vacancy announcement by the Education Ministry in January was aimed at terminating their service, the committee has been staging phase-wise protests for the last three months.

The TTSC, which has been demanding permanent status through internal competition, has also decided to launch stern protests if its demands are not addressed within a month.

“The government should give equal status to all the teachers,” said TTSC Vice-chairman Ashutosh Giri. “We need job guarantee through an equitable internal process and will continue protests until our voices are heard.”

The government is preparing to hold internal competition for the temporary teachers appointed before April 23, 2006 (after the People’s Movement II).

Over 6.5 million students are currently studying in 29,000 public schools across the country. The committee has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court demanding an end to the disparity among the temporary teachers.
