TU employees staging three-hour pendown daily

Tribhuvan University employees have been halting work for three hours every day demanding that the university administration double their allowances.

Tribhuvan University Employees’ Association (TUEA) has put forward a 43-point demand to the university, demanding open competition for selection of employees, improvement in the quality of education, adherence to academic calendar and monitoring of affiliate campuses, Kuber KC, TUEA president, said.

The demand to double employees’ allowances comes at a time when the TU has decided to stop providing the perks. KC, however, said TU officials have made written pledges to fulfil employees’ demands. “We have held several rounds of talks with the officials. During the talks, the officials pledge to meet our demands. It’s been three months and nothing has been done. This has forced us to launch a protest,” he said.

According to KC, they had given seven days to TU on August 7 to address their concerns. As TU turned a deaf ear to their demands, employees stopped working for three hours daily to press for the fulfilment of their demands. They have been halting work since August 14. They halted work for one week before opting for a three-hour pendown every day. KC warned that the employees will shut all TU offices if their demands go unheard.

He clarified that protesting employees have not disrupted regular work at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and the Office of the Controller of Examinations.
