The number of people migrating from Dipayal Silgadhi Municipality of Doti to other areas has gone up due to lack of basis amenities in the municipality.
“Failure to develop the municipality is the major reason behind growing migration of the locals,” said Hasina Sunar of Dipayal. Sunar attributed growing corruption for the underdevelopment and sorry state of the municipality.
For want of basic amenities, residents from Dipayal Silgadhi have been moving to Dhangadhi, Mahendranagar and other places in Tarai. A large number of people migrate from district headquarters Silgadhi bazaar every year.
The settlement has thinned at Pagari, Ratuli and Khalnga, among other places, in the municipality.
Dipayal Silgadhi was declared municipality some 33 years ago. “The municipality has fallen far behind,” said social development officer Ramesh Joshi. A large number of people have been migrating to villages from the municipality, said Joshi.
Data at the municipality office shows that as many as 378 families migrated to other places last year alone. However, the number of people coming to live in municipality is nil.
Many wards in the municipality are still deprived of basic facilities such as road, drinking water, health service and electricity.
