79 trafficked persons rescued

At least 79 persons were rescued from different parts of India in the past 11 years after Maiti Nepal was established in Kanchanpur.

After it was established, the organisation has prevented as many as 1,509 persons from crossing the border.

Sources said that of the 79 persons who were rescued, 32 have been sent to Maiti Nepal in Kathmandu, while others have been sent home after being rescued from India.

Maheshwori Bhatta, coordinator of Maiti Nepal, Kanchanpur, said five persons were rescued from the different places of India in 2013. “Among them, two are children while three are women,” she added.

Sources said Gaddachauki is used for human trafficking these days. It has also been learnt that some hotel proprietors were involved in sneaking them across the border. “Some agents have taken them to Banbasa through Gaddachauki,” said Bhatta.

Sources said the agents have been using the suspension bridge at Dodhara-Chandani after security was tightened at Gaddachauki border.

Maiti Nepal, Kanchanpur, says human trafficking has increased due to family disputes and betrayal in love.

“The women and girls fell into the hands of agents after disputes in their family,” said Bhatta. She said many women and girls were duped by agents who pretended to be in love with them.
