Two charged with human trafficking

Sunsari District Police Office (DPO) has charged two persons--Min Bahadur Basnet and Krishna Kumar Karki--of Shyam VDC-9, Dolakha with child trafficking. The DPO organized a press meet to make them public.

According to DSP Chiranjibi Koirala, cases have been filed against Basnet and Karki as they were found involved in trafficking Nepalese children to India.

On Tuesday, Indian Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) handed over to Nepal Police 13 children and three adults who were detained from Birpur of Supaul district near Nepal-India border on Monday.

The police investigation revealed that Basnet and Karki worked at a hotel in Jayapur, India. Both of them had come home during Dashain. Upon their return, they took along a large group of people, including children from Dolakha, Udayapur and Saptari districts to Bhimnagar, a small town near Nepal-India border.

“The reason why the children were being taken to India has yet to be revealed. Even the people who were being taken to India had no clue about what kind of work they would be doing India,” DSP Koirala said.  According to him, all 13 children--five boys and eight girls--will be handed to their families.

Earlier on Tuesday, the SSB had released 36 Nepalis after detaining them for 16 hours and handed over 16 others to the Nepal Police.

Most of the 52 Nepalis detained by the SSB at Birpur of Supaul district near Nepal-India border were heading to their place of employment in India.
