Envoy takes dismissal to court

The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a writ petition challenging Maya Kumari Sharma’s dismissal as Nepali Ambassador to Qatar on technical grounds.

“Sharma sent her legal representatives to file the petition, but could not do so as the power of attorney entrusted to her lawyer was not in-order,” Baburam Dahal, Assistant Spokesperson for the SC, told this daily. Advocate Ramchandra Paudel told court officials he will come back with the petition by putting all documents in order.

In her petition, Sharma has accused the government of removing her from office without following due legal procedures, according to officials. She has also accused the government of not giving her a chance to come clean on the charges levelled against her.

On September 26, the government had recalled her for publicly speaking about slave-like conditions in Qatar. In a series of reports, The Guardian has revealed a terrible situation of Nepali workers in the Gulf country. In an interview to BBC’s Shajha Sawal, Ambassador Sharma had termed Qatar “an open jail” for Nepali workers.
