Kuwait detains Illegal Nepali workers

Nepali citizens are among hundreds arrested in a latest crackdown on illegal migrant workers launched by the Kuwaiti authorities.

According to the Nepali Embassy in Kuwait, police arrested around 820 illegal migrant workers, including Nepalis, from the cities like Farwaniya and Souq Juma on Friday. The embassy, however, said that the number of arrested Nepalis could not be immediately ascertained.

A local media quoted a government official saying that the crackdown was aimed at discouraging illegal workers, and the arrested workers will be deported to their home countries after investigation. According to the embassy’s estimates, there are 70,000 Nepali migrant workers in Kuwait; many among them are said to be residing there illegally.  (PR)
