NAFEA to develop data bank on migrant workers

In the hope of curbing rising fraud cases in foreign employment, Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) has planned to develop a data bank.

“Once we develop the data bank, we will have detailed information of Nepali people who want to go abroad for foreign employment,” said Hansa Raj Wagle, chairman of NAFEA.

Wagle informed that the data bank will contain detailed information on people planning to go abroad for foreign employment and the record would be accessible to government authorities and 770 manpower companies registered with NAFEA.

Any Nepali will have to fill a separate form while applying for a passport. The details in that form will be stored in the data bank. Authorities believe that such a process will help to keep track of Nepali migrant workers.

Likewise, people can directly access the job demands from overseas through the software which is believed to curb the fraud cases in foreign employment. The software will also have a record of work permit taken by the agencies.

The NAFEA, the umbrella organization of foreign employment companies, will require around Rs 3-4 billion to fully set up the software.

By organizing a press conference in the capital on Friday, the NAFEA also made public a 21-point concept paper regarding foreign employment.

Some of the major concerns raised by the NAFEA are amending the Foreign Employment Act, 2064, provisions for compulsory recommendation of NAFEA while registering a new manpower agency, revising training module of the CTEVT, among others.
